So-Ho: A Brilliant Architectural History across Time

This tour a starts in Astor Place, an early high ground weighstation of the wealthy on their move uptown through the middle of Manhattan. Youll see what is left of the finest homes in America in the 1830s, Colonnade Row. Then we head down Broadway and with images from scores of sources we recreate earlier times. As we make our way downhill, and ultimately to Canal Street where the tour ends (appropriately at what was a river) we pass a stretch of blocks that contain more history than few spots in the country. We will tease out the different eras that passed through. A residential history was interestingly varied, with upper class and more modest residences along Broadway, depending how close one was to the river (Astors were always on the high ground in their uptown moves). Well piece together the federal style and Greek Revival homes that were the style of the day, 1830s and 40s. Then, we use the streetwalls of today and multiple images to make sense of a changing history that is shown through major technological shifts; in cast iron and then steel frame, and styles from Renaissance to Beaux Arts and Art Deco. And these different building types and sorts represent two completely different eras. What buildings are from a period when hoop skirts were the style, and Tiffanys and the finest hotels in the world made Broadway a world class promenade? And then what buildings are from a generation later, when no respecable lady would have been caught dead walking around by herself below Houston Street? And then youll learn all the reasons why they once built the most beautiful buildings in the world for storage, manufacturing, and industry.Additional InformationConfirmation will be received at time of bookingMinimum numbers apply.
