Join them as they take a musical journey from Old World to New, crossing oceans and centuries in celebration of musics power to bridge divides and inspire change. The concert begins in the Old World with Bedrich Smetanas lively Overture to the Bartered Bride. This popular opera, in which traditional expectations meet resistance from the forward-minded younger generation, helped establish the new Czech national music which would later inspire Smetanas fellow Czech, Dvorák. Next, its Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, a gorgeous stereophonic work by Vaughan Williams that brought a 16th century English tune into the early 20th in transcendent fashion. Another century later, this piece continues to top annual polls of popular classical works. To close the evening, its Dvoráks best known and most popular symphony, Symphony No. 9. Titled From the New World, this is the work that launched Dvorák into the international limelight. Dvorák lived in America for only three years, but they are regarded as the three years at the height of his musical arc, as he experienced this new continent with fresh eyes. In his New World Symphony, he combines inspiration from Native American music and African American spirituals into one seamless impression of this country and its people.
