It begins in a Colonial-era tavern, when innocent young Abby receives a nutcracker from Benjamin Franklin, a jolly old inventor with a knack for the pyrotechnic. After everyone else is fast asleep, Abby sneaks out of bed to peek at her new toy and suddenly finds herself in the midst of a battle—the redcoat-clad Mouse King has her beloved at his mercy. But when Abbys well-thrown shoe topples the monarch for good, the Nutcracker takes her on a tour of the Land of Snow and the Land of Sweets to celebrate and rub elbows with George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.Throughout their adventures, Tchaikovskys dazzling inventiveness propels the dances of nimble flowers and regal fairy queens. The Waltz of the Snowflakes floats weightlessly above the angelic voices of a youth choir, whereas the Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy tiptoes to the haunting, music-box chimes of a celesta. A medley of exotic national dances—including a Spanish bolero and Russian Trepak—add to the phantasmagoric celebration before the whole dream ends, as all dreams must.
