Nestled in the stunning Lawai Valley, Allerton Garden as we know it today has a rich history of philanthropy, art, and botanical curiosity that begins with Robert Allerton.Robert was an aspiring artist, a philanthropist, and “the richest bachelor in Chicago,” but it wasn’t until he became an amateur landscape architect that he discovered his life’s purpose – to become a patron of the arts. In 1938 Robert purchased 83 acres of the valley with his lifetime companion and adopted son John Gregg, and created his garden paradise.
