Quaint Honokaa Town greets visitors with fun and eclectic shops unique to this former sugar plantation hub. Enjoy some free time here. Grab shave ice from Fujino’s, fudge from Hamakua Fudge, or explore the shops and galleries before continuing on to Laupahoehoe Point. Laupahoehoe village was located here until the destruction left behind the 1946 tsunami forced the town to move to higher ground. Enjoy a picnic-style lunch here. The adventure continues at Akaka Falls State Park, the site of the largest easily accessible waterfall on the island. You’ll traverse a paved walking path right through the center of a lush rainforest to Akaka Falls, a stunning 442 foot waterfall that plunges down a sheer cliff and into the water below. Turning off the highway and onto the 4 mile Onomea Scenic Route we find Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, “a garden in a valley on the ocean”. Truly one of Hawaii Island’s hidden gems, this lush oasis is home to more than 2,000 plant species, birds and waterfalls.
